TOS Field Trips
Coastal Prairie: Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR and Eagle Lake

Attw01.JPG (8559 bytes)

Dates:

Tentatively set for Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3, 2005, 2 days.  This has always been our most popular trip and the roster fills fast.  Read the comments from two participants who went on the trip in 2003.

Habitat:

Coastal prairie, marshlands, lake.  This is a 2-day trip.  Saturday will start early at the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge.  There refuge manager Terry Rossignol or one of his staff will take us to the booming grounds of the prairie chickens.  While we travel to the lek, he will tell us about the status of the endangered Attwater Greater Prairie Chicken and their efforts to increase its numbers.   Because few of these birds remain in the wild, the nesting area is off limits to visitors, so this opportunity is rare.  We will spend the balance of the day visiting other areas of the refuge.  Sunday we will visit a closed area of Eagle Lake, controlled by the Lower Colorado River Authority.  A grassy isthmus juts out into the lake and gives a close viewing platform to the waterfowl as well as the birds inhabiting the adjacent woodlands.

Target birds

Greater Prairie Chicken, White-tailed Hawk, Short-eared Owl, Sprague's Pipit, Cinnamon Teal.  Check out the 2000 trip report and 2003 trip report.  The photo of a Greater Prairie-Chicken was taken through a spotting scope on our 2001 TOS trip by Tim Fennell.
