BUDGETING OTHER EXPENSES
MARITIMES
EXPEDITIONS
Campgrounds
Unlike many of our other birding caravans, on this Maritimes caravan, campgrounds are INCLUDED in the base price for the trip.
Fuel
By RV, we will travel approximately 3900 miles (combining Part 1 and Part 2). In addition, the birding caravaners will use fuel for accessing birding sites remote from the RV
parks. Typically, we will carpool on these excursions to reduce cost,
alleviate parking issues and facilitate communication.
Tolls
There may be a few of these. The one that comes to mind is the bridge
toll from Prince Edward Island where the 2007 toll was $40.75 for two axles
and $6.75 per additional axle.
Entrance fees, ferries, excursions, boating trips, etc.
All of those on the regular itinerary are INCLUDED in the base price for the
trip and are specifically listed in the price sheet. A few others are
optional. Consider especially Acadian Village (entrance fee ~$11 pp.)
and the Anne of Green Gables play (ticket $40 pp). There may be a few
other places, such as provincial parks, we could visit during our birding
excursions for which participants would pay modest entrance fees. On
Part 1 of the itinerary, we could take the boat trip at Gros Morne on
Western Brook Pond at an approximate cost of $39 pp. On Part 2 of the
itinerary, we will have the opportunity to take a boat excursion to Bird
Island, leaving from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Since participants in
Part 1 will already have seen the expected species on this cruise, we leave
it as an optional trip. The cost is approximately $35 pp.
Surcharge for long rigs.
Ferry companies charge extra for long rigs. Prices for this caravan
are based on rigs up to 30-ft. in length. For rigs 30-40 ft., bumper
to bumper, add $190. For rigs 40-50 ft., add $350. For rigs
50-60 ft., add $520. If you are towing a car, the extra cost for the
ferries is ~$290.
Personal expenses
Of course, you still have all the ordinary expenses of food, dining out,
souvenirs, etc. In addition and especially for non-birding spouses,
we'll have many opportunities along our route to visit museums, attend plays
and other entertainment such as the Scottish fiddler contests.
