camera_altmap11
camera_altmapBlack Elder8/5/20211Sambucus nigra or Sambucus canadensis = American elder, Common elderberry, American elderberry, Elderberry. Sambucus canadensis is often listed as synonym Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis, considered by some to be a European counterpart and by others as the accepted name, with S. canadensis the synonym. The debate goes on. There may be several varieties of S. canadensis-information is rather sketchy and, again, there does not appear to be a consensus-but var. canadensis, characterized by hairs on the leaflet veins but not the surface, is found in Minnesota. Bob, "Sambucus nigra is European. We have the native one: S. canadensis"Sambucus nigra
unfold_more Highbush-Cranberry - Viburnum opulus
camera_altmap11
camera_altmapHighbush-Cranberry8/5/20211Viburnum opulus var. americanum Identified by PictureThis as Viburnum opulus = Guelder-rose, Snowball tree, Water elder, Cramp bark, European cranberrybush. But Bob wrote, "Viburnum opulus is European and naturalized. But I know I've planted a lot of the natve V. trilobum. I've not seen any V. opulus on the property yet. BTW, they are very difficult to differentiate." Wikipedia says Viburnum trilobum is a species of Viburnum native to northern North America, from Newfoundland west to British Columbia, south to Washington state and east to northern Virginia. Viburnum opulus var. americanum, synonymous with and formerly known as Viburnum trilobum, is native to swampy woods, bogs, lake margins, pastures, thickets, slopes and moist low places from New Brunswick to British Columbia south to New York, the Great Lakes, South Dakota and Oregon. It is often called American cranberry bush in order to distinguish it from the similar European cranberry bush, Viburnum opulus. For many years, American cranberry bush has also been commonly called highbush cranberry. It is a deciduous shrub with a dense, rounded, spreading habit that typically grows to 8-12' tall. It features lacecap white flowers in spring in flat-topped 3" wide cymes of tiny fertile florets surrounded by larger sterile florets, drooping clusters of cranberry-like red berries (drupes) in fall and three lobed, maple-like, dark green leaves. The berries (drupes) are edible fresh off the shrub, and are much less bitter than those berries found on V. opulus. Berries are sometimes used to make jams and jellies. Fruits tend to shrivel after frost. Foliage turns a sometimes attractive purplish red in fall.Viburnum opulus

camera_altmap11
camera_altmapYellow Sweet-Clover8/6/20211Melilotus officinalis or Melilotus albus = White sweet clover, White melilot, Honey clover, Hubam clover, Bokhara clover. While some systematists treat white sweetclover (Melilotus alba) Medik. and yellow sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis) (L.) Lam as distinct species ([116,231], Isely 1990 cited in [48]), others suggest they are not distinct and recognize only one species, Melilotus officinalis ([256], van der Meyden personal communication cited in [268]). Other systematists suggest recognizing both species, since they have been identified as such for over 200 years [268], and Barneby [11] reports that the 2 species are genetically incompatible.Melilotus officinalis

unfold_more Common Grackle - Quiscalus quiscula
map14486
mapCommon Grackle7/7/2021 5:58 AM355Circling flocks of at least 300, plus smaller groups. I fail to see why this was â??flagged for review and is unusual for this date and/or location.â? Common Grackles are common in southern Wisconsin. Perhaps you meant to question the count of 355, which I already addressed in my submission. For the record, I am quite familiar with look-alike Great-tailed and Boat-tailed Grackles, differentiated from Common Grackles mostly by tail shape and head shape. Neither of these two were observed in Wisconsin. Common Grackles could also be confused with blackbirds and at this location by Red-winged Blackbirds. Length of tail was the easiest way for me to separate the two, even for flocks in flight. In a flying flock, the lack of any flashes of red-yellow also marks it as grackles not RWBL. For closer views, I separate them by head shape, eye color, and feather colors. To address the count, both COGR and RWBL are common at this farm, with higher counts usually favoring RWBL, but both in double digits. On the occasion of the submission in question, I had counted 55 COGR singly or in small groups. When I got to another part of the farm, suddenly a huge flock of COGR lifted from the ground. The swarm circled, split into three flocks, recombined, etc. I estimated 300 in the flock(s) and I identified them by their long tails and absence of red/yellow flashes.Quiscalus quiscula

Trip Notes

Barnhaus farm 2021

Nature survey of farm in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin
During our stay at the 65-acre farm outside of Mount Horeb in July and early August 2021, I made a daily walk each morning and studied the wildlife. Walks were about one mile and took about two hours, usually starting shortly after sunrise. All walks started at the house and most included the eastern boundary along the driveway. The area covered each day varied and followed four basic routes:
1. Upper meadows, western wooded boundary, northeast section
2. Lower meadows, western wooded boundary
3. Sugar River area, southern and western wooded boundaries
4. Road overlooking Sugar River and along southern boundary
The property was surveyed 31 mornings 7 Jul-10 Aug 2021. Median start of walking was 6:35 AM for an average distance of 0.95 mi. and a median duration was 1.9 hour. On average, 21 bird species were seen each morning with a range of 10-33 species. A total of 57 bird species were identified and 57 plant species were discovered, in addition to eight mammals and five butterflies. The largest number of birds was on or over the grasslands. However, the greatest diversity of birds was in the Sugar River area and along the wooded western edge of the farm. Almost all the identified plants were photographed, as well as many of the birds.
Early morning sunrise sometimes provided a rainbow of meadow grasses and flowers. In the photo, green grasses and white Queen-Anne's lace dominate the foreground, Pinnate prairie coneflowers provide a yellow band, covered by red Big bluestem and a morning fog over Sugar River, and crowned by border trees and hills at the horizon.
